The Geierswalder See is the flooded remnant pit of the Koschen open-cast mine. Rehabilitation was completed in 2004 and the lake opened in 2006 — the first water in the Lusatian Lake District usable for tourism. Today 620 hectares of water lie in front of the door, connected to the neighbouring lakes by a navigable canal.

Timeline
From remnant pit to lake.

Koschen open-cast mine. Lignite mining in the area between Saxony and Brandenburg, north-west of Hoyerswerda.
- flooding
Water from the Schwarze Elster. The remnant pit is flooded — 92 million cubic metres, up to 101 m above sea level.
- 2004
Rehabilitation completed. Slopes secured, shores modelled, beaches created.
- 2006
Opened. The first lake in the emerging Lusatian chain of lakes usable for tourism.
- 2020
Fishing permitted. Day and week permits for visiting anglers have been available since July.
